Located on Carrer Porter i Moix in Barcelona, the project comprises 89 social housing units distributed across two facing plots, rising to 7 stories (Ground + 6) on the square side and 5 stories (Ground + 4) on the street side. The architectural response to Mediterranean well-being revolves around interconnected central courtyards that ensure cross-ventilation for all apartments. Utilizing the Venturi effect combined with rooftop louvers, these courtyards provide natural cooling during summer while fostering social interaction among residents via connecting walkways.
The building pairs structural compactness with adaptable typologies, featuring non-hierarchical, interchangeable rooms tailored to evolving needs, alongside generous 2-meter-deep balconies shaded by outdoor curtains. A strong environmental ambition is demonstrated through biosourced materials, a prefabricated CLT timber structure braced by concrete cores, a green roof, and water and heat recovery systems. The porous ground floor, open to the square, enhances connection to the neighborhood and contributes to the building’s cooling, while the naturally lit basement is designed to eventually serve as climate shelters. Adaptable, inclusive, and sustainable, this building prefigures new Mediterranean ways of living.
