The transformation of the Grands Moulins presents an opportunity for the city center of Corbeil-Essonnes to reinvent its relationship with the Seine and Essonne rivers, weaving a narrative that puts its medieval, industrial, and natural heritage at the service of the ecological transition. This project addresses the adaptation of our cities to major climate challenges, turning the site into a key landmark of resilience within the Parisian metropolis.
Once isolated, the Grands Moulins will tomorrow become an integral part of the city center, enhancing its character. Opening up the site gives rise to a new central hub, revealing the confluence of the river and the stream, as well as the historical, industrial, and suburban neighborhoods of Corbeil-Essonnes. Articulated around this confluence are various new public spaces that reconnect the City Hall square, the uncovered banks of the Essonne, the quays of the Seine, and the major adjacent thoroughfares at the municipal scale. Around these diverse public and private spaces, the existing heritage buildings are renovated, transformed, rehabilitated, extended vertically, and complemented by new constructions. All existing structures are enhanced and amplified to maximize natural light for atypical family housing units.
